Mr Macintosh Facebook:
1. Google Art Project:
A bit of culture from Google! Free of course like everything from them except for advertising, this lets you visit major galleries in amazing detail. Watch the YouTube video first then go to the site.
2. iBooks Author:
Create your own interactive text books for the iPad with the free iBooks Author. Templates to get you started and the sky’s the limit. Could be the start of a whole new area in both educational text books and self publishing.
3. DropBox for iDevices:
Although it been around as a free way to sync files between computers and even between people on different computers, you can also install an App on your iPhone or iPad so you can move files between the two and/or your computer over the internet. If you want to send images to an iPad in Sydney for example, you can drop them into a DropBox account, email the account details to the iPad whose user can then log in and retrieve them. All for free up to 2GB.
Apple tried to buy the company but they weren’t selling!
4. Growly Notes Instead of One Note:
A free and useful application for note taking and a lot more. You can add text, video clips, web addresses etc, in fact any kind of data that you want to store. You can even record audio or video notes right into it. Pretty amazing for a free app.
Apparently there is a program on Windows called One Note that is very good, but Microsoft doesn't make it for Macs. Enter Growly Notes to fill in.
5. Keychain2Go :
If you are familiar with Keychain Access in your Utilities folder then you will be aware that all your passwords are stored here when the Mac offers a little checkbox labelled Save in Keychain. If you are looking for your previously saved passwords they will be in here. All you need is your computer account password, if you have one. Keychain2Go is an app for your iDevice so you can access and modify that keychain from any of your devices. $4.99 in the iTunes Store.
6. iPhone 4 Text Enlargement :
If you are getting on a bit (like me!) and finding that text is too small in your message app you can go to Settings/General/Accessibility and make it bigger. Yay!
7. Discovr Music :
No, not a typo, Discovr Music is an Aussie app costing 99c and a fun way to find new music similar to stuff you like and also find out more about the music you already have. Listen to clips, read bios, watch videos and buy music direct from the app.
8. Pinterest :
The latest social media site is an interesting one of ‘pinning’ photos on boards that you can create or add to someone else’s or re-pin pics you like. Its growing really fast, specially with women.
9. VLC Player update :
One of the essential free Open Source bits of software is VLC Player which has had a major update to version 2. It will play any video file format you throw at it and even let you do some basic editing, so go ahead and get the new one.
10. Opera, A Different Mobile Browser :
Opera is a browser that offers a choice from Safari. Of course it claims to be faster and better but as it’s free from the iTunes Store why not give it a test? You might prefer it.
11. Chomp :
This extremely successful app is used to find other apps by keyword search and it is so good at it that Apple has bought the company to integrate their software directly into the App Store. Free.
12. Words With Friends :
I know that this is totally addictive if you’re a scrabble type of person because my darling plays it in any time she has spare and manages to run a business too! You play remote word games with friends anywhere and over any time frame. Up to 20 games can be on the go at one time and you can find which of your Facebook friends are in on it. Heaps are... $2.99
