Now that all the kerfuffle has died down and many of the industry Goliaths who spent their waking hours in battle with Steven Jobs have been so generous in their accolades, we are left wondering if our Apple will ever be the same. No Steve no vision? Well it looks to be business as usual with the share price barely registering a blip and the iPhone 4S flying off the shelves despite the critics panning it, just like they did with most of the previous Apple product... There aren't a lot of people that can be genuinely called a genius: Steve Jobs was one. He has revolutionised the computer world by changing the way the average person interacts with their devices and their world. And made a lot of money doing it. The modern western person's world will never be the same as it was before Apple's devices affected many aspects of this world, from the iPod to the iPhone and iPad we are using the devices, or copies of them by other co... So Steve Jobs, Apple's maestro, has supposedly retired due to ill health. We shall see. I reckon he will still be very involved behind the scenes, rather than out front for some time to come. He has presided over some of the most ground breaking designs in the personal computer/mobile device market in ways that have changed all our lives to some extent. And made several fortunes doing it! The original iMac was ahead of it's time in many ways and ushered in feature... Read more...

With all the buzz and importance attached to mobile devices - iPhones, iPods and iPads - the regular desktop and laptop machines have largely been forgotten until now with the latest release of the latest computer operating system, Lion or Mac OS X 10.7.It is available only to Intel-chip computers from the last 2 years or so and is downloaded instead of being installed from a disk. This is probably the way software installs will go in the future as i... Read more...

Once more into the breach… Apple is changing again. The announcement of iCloud, the new free syncing service, Lion OSX 10.7 the new operating system for Mac computers and iOS 5 the new operating system for mobile devices heralds a major shift in Apple's focus. This time, the emphasis is on our data rather than our computer, our phone, our device. Once we embrace the benefits of iCloud syncing all of our stuff so we can g... Read more...

Its been ages since I posted on my site: apologies for the slackness. And it's not for want of things to comment on, rather a lack of time…The writers of malware, spyware and viruses are trying to tap into the ever growing Mac user community with mixed results. Still no viruses or spyware at the time of writing, so they have resorted to other scams: you might find an alert message appearing when you visit certain sites telling you that you need to download some software... Here we are at the beginning of 2011 as Apple users of both desktop and laptop Macs; iPods, iPads and iPhones. What does the year hold for us?What we are seeing with our commitment to Apple products is one overriding reason that we have this allegiance: Ease of Use. What this means in the real world that we live in, rather than the world of specification, possibility and hype, is that when we buy any of the products mentioned we know it will just work. Apart from obv... Read more...

Having spent a couple of months with the iPhone 4 and the iPad I am happy to report a seamless integration into my online life. The iPhone has taken over from the previous 3G version without a hitch: it does everything at least as well as before but synchs to my iMac notably faster. The camera is far better with a zoom and flash and of course it takes HD movies! Something that gets overlooked is the brighter, sharper screen. But I still need glasses to use it properly, in fact I require them to ... Read more...

Here we go: the iPhone 4 is released this week in Australia although I will have to wait longer if I want a white one, which I do. Despite the media furore over the antennae 'problem' it is selling and selling. And selling, 3 million in 22 days. It looks like a heap of people want to tall-poppy the huge company Apple has become simply because it is so big and successful. And loved! Very unusual for a huge company to be liked by it's customers to such an extent.Tha... Read more...

Having lived with an iPad had now for two weeks I have to say that I'm very happy with it. Although it's not an essential purchase it is certainly very nice to have around. The main use I find is sitting on the lounge surfing the web and doing e-mails. It's a lot easier and nicer than using a laptop (something that I don't possess). And there are also some very pleasant apps for browsing newspapers, looking at photographs and reading blogs. Quite a few media institutions have created their own a... Read more...

Advertising is a vexed issue, we don't really like but it is the commerce that fuels the free aspect of the internet that we all do like. Google makes billions from tiny incremental search revenues, a few cents per click, they rule the current advertising revenue roost. However, in the last few years a big change has begun in how people access communication information: the smart phone really arrived with the iPhone, up until it's release smart phones were a minimal part of h... Here in Australia we are suffering under a government that is trying to bring a big foot down on file sharers, same thing in the UK, same thing in China, Iraq…great company to be in isn't it? In the obviously repressive regimes they simply want to stop any opposition, but in our more enlightened 'democracies' the proposed legislation is targeting file sharers, those people who illegally download music, movies or software.Illicit file sharing we are told, is costing millions a ye... There is always talk of how much of the personal computer market Apple enjoys; we used to hear 2-3% years ago, but as always there are lies, damn lies and statistics. Apparently in the USA for machines costing over US$1000, Mac has over 80% of the market according to this Barron's Tech Trader blog report who then say it has "22% in the retail channel".The melt-down of this is what we have always known: the corporate market who buy hundreds or thousands of cheap PCs don't go ... It here: after weeks of hype the iPad was announced last night. It is basically a 10" iPod Touch, which means it can read documents, surf the web, play games, download and read books, connect to a wireless network or a 3G data account and surf the web. All with touch-screen input which is the way computers are going to move in the next phase as we can see by the popularity of the iPhone and other touch screen devices.Apparently it is very fast, a lot faster to use th...
